The question we hear most is "roughly how much?" Here is an honest answer: what most moves cost this year, what makes a price go up or down, and how to keep yours at the bottom of the range.
The short answer
These are the prices we quoted most often last year for a local move, within about 20 miles, on a weekday. They include the van, the crew, fuel, blankets and insurance, and tax.
| Home | Crew and time | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Studio or 1-bed apartmentabout 10 boxes a room | 2 people, half a day | $350 to $550 |
| 2-bed apartment or house | 3 people, most of a day | $600 to $900 |
| 3-bed house | 3 people, a full day | $900 to $1,400 |
| 4-bed house | 4 people, a day and a half | $1,400 to $2,100 |
Moving further? For long-distance moves, add roughly $1.60 a mile for the van and crew, plus an overnight stay if the drive is over five hours.
What changes the price
The biggest thing is how much you have, not how many bedrooms. A two-bed apartment with a full loft and a garage can take longer than a tidy three-bed house. That is why we always come and look, or do a video call, before we give a fixed price.
The second is access. Stairs, a long walk from the van, a narrow lane or a small elevator that only takes two boxes at a time all add hours. If we cannot park near the door, we have to carry everything further, and that time is on the quote.
The third is the date. Fridays, the last few days of the month and the school summer vacation are when everyone moves, and when prices are highest. A Tuesday in the middle of the month can be up to a fifth cheaper for exactly the same job.
Extras to budget for
- Packing by us: from $180 for a 2-bed home, with materials
- Boxes and tape, if you pack yourself: about $60
- Storage between homes: from $25 a week
- Pianos, safes and hot tubs: priced on their own
How to keep it down
- Clear out first. Sell, give away or tip what you do not want. Every box you do not move is money saved.
- Pick a weekday mid-month, if your dates allow it.
- Book six weeks ahead. Late bookings get whatever crew is left.
- Sort out parking. Ask the city about a suspension for the van, at both ends.
- Measure the big things, and the doors they need to go through.
What you will never pay for with us: fuel surcharges added on the day, waiting time when your keys are late, or a charge for the blankets and covers that protect your things. The price we quote is the price you pay, unless you add more to the move.
